Power Start

Purpose Uncover what is possible, what is within a group's power to change.
What is the desired Outcome? Help the group discover what is possible and hopefully to feel less fearful and powerful.
What is your intent with this item? To show the group what actions they can take now.
When to use this? When a group is facing challenges but is struggling with what to do. This can be especially powerful with groups that are feeling disempowered, to help with their motivation and morale.
Who should be involved? The group facing challenges and a facilitator. Oftentimes, with this activity, we may want to ask the people leader to sit out. It depends on the safety of the group.
Meeting Questions
  • Why are we here? & What are we doing?
  • What is the challenge we're facing today?
  • What is your 15 percent?
    • Where do you have discretion and freedom to act?
    • What can you do without more resources or authority?

Facilitation Guide

Time Agenda Item Going For Process Activity/Instructions Prep/Materials Output/Comments
5 mins Why are we here? & What are we doing? Reminding everyone why we're here and sharing the direction of the session. Radiate purpose and agenda. Make sure you've sent out the meeting invite ahead of time with the purpose of the session and the questions for the meeting.
5 mins What is the challenge we're facing today? Giving context for the discussion Share the context or have the people involved share about the problem we're trying to solve. Make sure you've outlined some of this in the meeting invite so the group is able to spend some time reflecting on this ahead of time if they'd like.
50 mins What is your 15 percent?
  • Where do you have discretion and freedom to act?
  • What can you do without more resources or authority?
Uncovering what is possible, giving people time to think about the possible solutions and then time to voice their thoughts and talk through their ideas with others. Individual Brainstorm - in the session give everyone time to consider the problem and come up with solutions. (5 mins)

Send members to breakout rooms to share their ideas with the group (can do pairs or groups of four, in this guide we've timed it for groups of four). Once each person has shared their ideas, the others can ask clarifying questions and offer advice. (40 mins)

Have a whiteboard ready or some common space where everyone can put their ideas
15 mins What did we come up with? Give space for the group to propose their solutions to the larger group. Group Discussion - ask each room to share any of the solutions that they want to propose that the team moves forward with. If you've captured ideas in a common space, make sure you are displaying this as the groups share.
20 mins Where do we go from here? Getting ideas and buy-in from the group on next steps. Pose the question to the group and document any action items, who is responsible, and when we can check in on them next. As the facilitator, capture any action items and share them out with the group.

Invite People to Meeting

Purpose

Emphasize individual contribution

Once in the meeting:

  • 1, 2, 4, All Breakouts
    • Breakout 0 - one person, brainstorm in the main session
    • Breakout 1 - two people in a room
    • Then Switch Rooms
    • Breakout 2 - four people in a room
  • During all the breakouts:
    • Make sure people can ask the facilitator for help
    • Facilitator should offer clarifying questions
    • Offer a whiteboard space to capture output
    • Focus on overlaps and what is still missing
  • Outstanding Questions:
    • How do we engage people with accountability?
    • What happens after the groups of four meet?
    • What if not everyone can access a shared place to write things down?
